Carex is a spectacular bright yellow grass-like plant that thrives in shade, where it can add a dose of bright accent color to contrast with the darker colors of shade plants like Hostas and ferns. It forms slowly spreading, compact clumps. The brown flower spikes that emerge in late May are also attractive. While Carex is will thrive in wet soils, we have found that it is not at all fussy about moisture, and is a low-maintenance plant in full to part shade. Deer wonβt touch Carex: the leaves are quite sharp and abrasive. Overall, a tough plant that can be used in a variety of garden spaces for a splash of color.
