Perovskias are shrubby, aromatic, upright perennials with small silver-gray foliage on sturdy stems. Sprays of small tubular blue flowers appear in July and continue to bloom until frost. Perovskias will flop if they don't get enough sun. These plants will tolerate dry conditions, and require well-drained soil. They are not suited to wet soils. Foliage is strongly scented with a sage-like aroma that repels deer and other browsing pests. 'Denim and Lace' is a sturdy, compact cultivar that grows 30"H x 36"W. We have previously grown 'Longin', a taller, less sturdy variety that tended to flop badly unless in full sun. Perovskias should be cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring before new growth begins. Don't worry, they are tough plants and will grow back.
