Persicaria is primarily a foliage specimen plant, with striking lance-shaped tricolor leaves with purplish edges, a green chevron highlight, and a dark purple center. The somewhat insignificant, small white flowers appear in midsummer. ‘Red Dragon’ forms compact clumps that will slowly get larger each season. Persicaria is certainly hardy to hardiness zone 5 as it has survived in our garden for many, many seasons. Deer occasionally browse Persicaria, so precautions to prevent browsing are warranted.
