This ornamental grass forms thick upright clumps of grass-like leaves above which airy flower panicles emerge in mid-summer. The brown stalks and feathery panicles offer winter interest as well. Indestructible, and not a fast, thuggish spreader like so many ornamental grasses. Deer don’t typically bother it.
'Northwind' is blue-green and has airy white flowers. 'Ruby Ribbons' features red flowers, and the foliage slowly turns burgundy red in late summer. Our planting of "Ruby Ribbons' died out over the winter in 2023-2024, and has been replaced by Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks'.
